The Mission is to write a story that beats longer than my heart

The story

When I was 15 years old I was diagnosed with dyslexia. Dyslexia is a learning disorder characterised by difficulty reading, writing, and spelling. Although dyslexia does not affect intelligence, I always felt like there was something wrong with me.

Like I was broken in some way.

Six months into university I dropped out. I was the kid that believed because I was different I was deficient. I really believed that I was the stupid, crazy and lazy kid. Many people, teachers and friends said I wasn’t good enough and that I wasn’t going to make it. Some people even said I was going to end up in jail just because of where I am from.

But I didn’t allow their stereotypes to define who I am. It took me a long time, but I learned to find value in myself when the world did not. I transcended past their low expectations. My worth is not dictated by the few that did not understand my struggle.

I grew up in a time where intelligence is determined by how well you can navigate the world in the most predictable way. You go to school, get a job, work 60 years, retire, and that’s it. Passion, inspiration, motivation, they just didn’t fit in for a boy like me. I didn’t fit what society thought was “correct” and it turned out to be my biggest blessing.

I focused on my strengths. My creativity, my social skills, my innovation. I travelled the world, built a business, founded a nonprofit,  made connections with some of the most inspirational people in New Zealand, and I’m not done. My mission isn’t complete until I make it easier for the next kid like me.

The kid who doesn’t fit in. The kid who doesn’t have it all. The kid who has the potential, but just needs that push. My current focus is to inspire the youth of South Auckland, to go beyond what the stereotypes expect from them. To chase their goals and ambitions and find purpose in life.

My projects, my company, my legacy, it’s not about the money. It’s about the lives I’ve impacted and continue to impact. It’s about creating a better society for our tomorrow.  And I’m not stopping until the work is done.
